My name is Vilvan Gunasingham. I have been living in Markham for decades and have been a member of the St. Andrews United Church.
I work for Autoliv, a Swedish firm at their plant in Markham, Ontario. Autoliv is the largest Safety Electronics Company in the world. For your interest, most probably the safety components in your vehicle such as all bags & belts, radar & night vision and pedestrian protection systems are manufactured by our facilities worldwide.
I am involved in much community work in my city. I have worked with the Chinese community in Markham on several community projects including social justice (human rights, municipal services to Chinese Churches & funding for ESL Learning Centre), and Taste of Asia (largest multicultural fair in Canada at the Pacific Mall). Most recently with the Chinese Christian community at Knox United Church in Scarborough.
By participating in this visit I will gain a broader understanding of their challenges in ministries and learn from each other how to expand on our relationship. This experience will enable me to fully engage in listening and sharing with the Chinese people and be in a position to answer questions about Chinese Canadian living in Toronto.
In addition, as a General Council Executive member for the Ethnic Ministry, first hand learning and experience will be valuable towards my contribution to the Church.
